This is one of the stained glass windows at the Main Post Chapel of the Presidio of San Francisco. The words, "They also serve, who only stand and wait" are as true today as ever. The long history of the Presidio of San Francisco was one of stand and wait -- waiting for an enemy which never arrived upon our shores. But, the harsh weather most of the year on the Western shore of San Francisco, combined with the primitive conditions which didn't allow a soldier to stay warm, accounted for numerous casualties during the wars for which the Presidio served.
