Although the Conservatory of Flowers survived the 1906 earthquake intact, in 1995 San Francisco experienced a ferocious December storm which succeeded in doing what the quake was unable to do. It was virtually destroyed and closed.
Upon the acquisition of funds, the Conservatory was rebuilt to the original specifications -- probably employing some sounder building techniques and materials to withstand severe natural occurrences. The Conservatory reopened to the public September 2003. A City Birds digital photo. |
