The markers of our heroes provide a lot of history to think about. Our National Cemeteries, as well as local cemeteries throughout the land, provide an opportunity to reflect on the true cost of war and to mingle among the heroes who paid the price for those wars.
To the left is the upper portion of a rather tall marker, and to the right is the lower portion. P. Petroff, born in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1826, emigrated to the United States and, at the age of 36 years, joined the Union Army in 1862, the second year of the Civil War. He was assigned to the 14th U.S. Infantry of the Army of the Potomac. It would seem this Civil War Veteran moved on to San Francisco after the war, and, hopefully had a happy life.
