The old shore batteries along the San Francisco coast were built to defend the area in preparation for America's first global expansion of the empire (what we call "Nation Building" today) during our War with Spain.
Under the command of such generals as Lt. Gen. Winfield Scott (America's first three star general), Mexico's Western territories from Texas to California had been conquered. The Mexican flag had been lowered from the Presidio of San Francisco in 1848 and the Stars and Stripes raised. Battery Dynamite seen here was built in 1895, three years before our War with Spain began. Several batteries had already been completed and made operational some years earlier. Because the increasing number of troops required to man the batteries and large numbers of troops arriving in preparation to going "over there," Fort Winfield Scott was established and construction of the barracks seen in this gallery commenced in 1910.
